About Us
We came together to offer immediate support during the initial phase of the post-hurricane crisis in Western North Carolina. From the beginning, we began layng the groundwork for how our region could be rebuilt to be stronger, more equitable and more racially just than it was before the storm.
The People’s Place is leading the next phase of the Bridging the Gaps, which will continue to take a relational approach to help local communities organize to gain access to resources for long-term recovery and to advocate effectively for their own needs, particularly for their most marginalized members. Bridging The Gaps organizes to ensure that the most marginalized members of our community are being connected with necessary supplies and support in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene’s devastating impact on Asheville and Buncombe County.
Bridging The Gaps started as a collaborative initiative between multiple organizations. By working together and taking on differentiated roles, we were able to maximize our collective impact in the complex and evolving situation. We are deeply grateful to the YMI Cultural Center in particular for sharing their space for our operations in weeks following the storm.
